How to Start a Successful Women’s Book Club

Book clubs are a fun way to share in the joy of reading with others while also providing a social outlet. Women often turn to book clubs in their local communities to meet new people and catch up with old friends, but women's book discussion groups also meet online.

If you don’t have a local women’s book club in your area, perhaps you can consider starting your own. Starting a book club for women isn’t difficult, but it can take some time and dedication. Below are some simple tips to get you motivated:

Start With Friends and Family

The easiest way to get a women's book discussion started in your area is to turn to friends and family members. Once you get a book club started and have a few meetings, you can then encourage your friends to invite their friends. You can also encourage family members to invite friends of theirs from work, church, school or other clubs they are involved with.

Have an Additional Weekly Topic

Aside from discussing the book or books everyone is reading, consider having a topic or theme for each meeting. This will give club members a chance to learn more about one another and also share more about themselves. The topic can relate to the books the club is reading, but they can also be on unrelated topics.

Assign Roles

Any successful women’s book club has roles for everyone, so consider how you want to organize your club. You may choose to have one person in charge of scheduling and holding each meeting, but you could also swap roles on a rotating basis depending on who has availability that week or month.

Serve Refreshments

You can also liven up your meetings by serving refreshments. These don’t have to be anything big or fancy, but providing a little bit of food and drink to meeting attendees is a nice gesture. As your club grows, you may consider taking donations to order pizza or something similar for the group.
